"I was a typical kiwi kid, growing up on rice bubbles with full fat milk for breakfast and white bread jam sammies for lunch. My parents owned not one but two fish and chip shops, meaning dinner was often leftovers. When I was old enough I even worked in one."

It wasn't until I bucked the family trend and went to university that I was exposed to a world of ‘exotic foods' like rice, pasta, grain bread, muesli, and vegetables that were not the standard spud and silverbeet.

Even with a degree in Nutrition I did not markedly change my habits. It was not until one day while giving a Heart Foundation presentation to school children that I actually listened to what I was saying: ‘We are what we eat'. I realised what I ate and how I take care of my body and brain made a huge difference to my ability to achieve my lifetime goals. Nutrition and exercise were not just for athletes.

With this realisation, I began to keep up a regular exercise routine and eat anything that was good for me. Don't get me wrong it was not easy, but the drive to be the best I could be spurred me on. The taste and texture of these strange healthy foods no longer mattered as I had a higher purpose that I was not willing to risk for any short lived displeasure.

We all have something in our lives that is important to us. It could be to be your grandchildren, your business or to be a great role model to your children. By understanding how good nutrition and exercise can help you to achieve your goals you will be empowered to never give up.

It's not about knowing what to do, we all know enough to be healthy. It's about being motivated, having some accountability, an emotional connection and viewing your healthy weight like any other goal in life.

I like beer and I love chocolate, and if I have to I will even eat fish and chips. While I do practice what I preach I'm not perfect and you don't have to be either. What matters is how much you eat or drink, how often and when you do it. To do that you need some accountability to ditch your wayward habits and form some new ones that will take you in the direction you desire.

I know what it is like and I can help you to reach your goals. Drop me a line at dane@eatfit.co.nz or call me on 0211176717. Whatever you do, just get started and make a difference in your life today.
